Photos

Here's my batch of photos from the race. Never tried this Peecasso Weeb stuff before so hopefully this works. They uploaded in random order so....good luck on figuring out the chronology. Thanks again everyone for a great experience.

You Were All More Marvelous!

Congratulations to everyone! It was a great race and a fun experience...for the supporters, too. Thanks to the Hillsboro Barkers for all they did to make it happen.

Schedule and Packing List

Just a few days to go!  Here's the plan and suggested packing list...

SCHEDULE

THURSDAY

5 to 8 PM - Pasta dinner at the Barkers, decorate vans, final briefing
8:00PM - Van #1 makes final prep and tries to get some sleep!

FRIDAY

2:00AM - Van #1 leaves Hillsboro (pulling out!)
3:45AM - Van #1 arrives at Timberline Lodge
3:55AM - Check in, receive "baton" (race wrist strap)
4:15AM - Start (Baron heads out the chute!)
7:30AM - Van #2 leaves Hillsboro (pulling out)
9:00AM - Van #2 arrives at Sandy Safeway 37601 U.S. 26, Sandy, OR 97055
10:00AM - Predicted 1to2 van exchange at leg #6 (Hilary starts leg #7)
(Van#1 drives back to Hillsboro for showers, lunch and naps)
2:45PM - Van #1 Leaves Hillsboro for 2nd time (pulling out)
3:30PM - Predicted 2to1 van exchange at leg #12, (Baron starts leg #13) 20 SE Madison St. Portland, OR 97214
   (Van#2 does whatever… )
4:30PM - Laur and Paula (volunteers) leave Hillsboro for Exchange #22
5:45PM - Laur and Paula checkin for monitoring positions
9:20PM - Predicted 1to2 van exchange, at end of leg #18 (Hillary starts #19)  58892 Saulser Road St. Helens, OR 97051 (Columbia Co. Fairgrounds)
(Van#1 drives to Mist (or Jewel HS) and sleeps)
10:00PM - Laur and Paula check out, head back to Hillsboro (will probably miss us by about an hour or two, unless we're really fast!)

SATURDAY

2:50AM - Predicted 2to1 van exchange at leg #24 (Baron starts his final leg, #25)
(Van#2 suggested to go to Jewel HS and sleep/shower/eat --route to Exchange #30 is always congested so plan accordingly)
6:00AM - Christain (volunteer) leaves Hillsboro for exchange #30
7:30AM - Christian checks in (we should see Christian at the van exchange!)
8:10AM - Predicted 1to2 van exchange at leg #30 (Hilary starts her final leg, #31)
(Van#1 drives to Seaside, hee haw!)
12:15PM - Christain checks out (thanks!)
12:30PM - Predicted finish time, all meet near finish line and "run" final few yards with Tiffany.  Get medals, official expensive team photo, our own cool free photos, check out the scene, etc.  No plans beyond that… usually Seaside is crowded and it's nice to go to Cannon Beach and hang out, or head home, or whatever...
(Showers available at middle school in Seaside)
Bring cash, the showers at the schools cost money.

The exchange and finish times are estimates and will probably drift one direction or another.
Who has an iPhone?  There's a sweet HoodToCoast app --if each van has one, we can sync  and record race times that way --it's really convenient.  I'll check to see if it works for iPod touches (need a way to sync them).  I have one and I know Hilary has one, so we'd be set that way.

PACKING LIST

Runner:

  Running Equipment
- Official Bib with Medical Information written on back (I've got the bibs)
- Running shoes (one or two pairs)

- Under-wear or jog bras for running (three sets)

- Hydration drink (Gluekos, Nuun, etc.) and Energy food (Gu, PowerBars, etc.)
- Sunglasses

  Non-Running Equipment

- Flip-flops or sandals
- Socks
- Warm socks (for sleeping or hanging around at night)
- A light jacket, sweats, hat and mittens (for hanging around the mountain and sleeping at night)
- Sleeping bag, pillow, sleeping pad
- Earplugs

- Small towel
- Bug repellent (a bee flew up my nose one year and stung me)

Captain:
Signed safety agreement

Van:
Clipboard with "scoring sheet" --it's our responsibility to record our leg times
2 reflective vests (Ellen and Jessie are bringing them)
2 pair of flashers (littler flashing lights you clip on your person; if anyone has some, let me know; I forgot about these, we already have some, but I'll get some more --a runner has to wear 2 (1 on front and 1 on back), so it's good to have 4 per van to make exchanges easy)
At least 2 headlamps --suggest each runner have their own, less sweat sharing.
Plenty of water (there's a coupon for buying water at Safeway I'll give Van#2)
First Aid Kit
Cell phone
2way radios
Maps of the course (I'll print out copies for all)

Final Stretch

Well, I went to the volunteer mtg tonight.  Next thing is the event itself!!

Here are a few things to note:

1.  The are NO headphones allowed on the race course.  Speakers are allowed, but no earpieces.  Last year I passed a few people wearing speakers --weird.  I like to train with my iPod shuffle, but races themselves are great to do untethered anyway.

2.  We need to round up some reflective vests to wear during the dark hours.  Anyone have any?  I've got one, and have 2 ready for our volunteers.  We need to find 3 more (2 per van makes things the easiest).

3.  Tapering is real -- we should all start to take it easy about now and rest during the next week.  Any more hard training will only wear you down now.  Do some short comfortable runs, get lots of good sleep, and hydrate well during the week.  Also, as we heard in recent emails, during the 3-ish days before the event switch off whole-grains to the puffy stuff.  :^)

4.  Packing -- everyone will need to bring a bunch of stuff to survive, both running stuff (shoes, layered clothing, etc.) and non-running stuff (sleeping bags, earplugs, towels, favorite snackies --I'll have plenty of peanut butter tortillas).  There are several lists out there, including some in the articles below.  I'll try to post one here as well, later...

5.  May I underscore using Body Glide or similar anti-chafe product!

Here's another article written by a guy that I ran HTC with last year.  He's a running coach, and does  sub-6minute pace legs... Check the links at the bottom too:

Hellyeah

The Helvetia Half. Our backyard run. We've wanted to run this race for several years - especially since it's so close to home. Why run the backroads for free when you can pay money? The stars aligned this year -- our marathon training called for a 12 miler on this exact date. We signed up, the Farrer's watched our kids, we biked to the starting line (zooming pass all those people walking from the Intel parking lots ... suckers!), the sky was overcast, the rendition of the Star-Spangled Banner induced tears, and I stuffed my pockets with free Cliff Bars. Oh! And the run was fantastic. We had fun and ran a good race.

Amazing Boston Marathon

New (unofficial) world record in the Boston Marathon today. He ran the 26.2 miles at a 4:42 pace!! That would bury the needle in our little gauge to the right there... INCREDIBLE.

Time to "Log Your Run!" Everyone

OK, I think we're rolling on the running logs and stats now. Check out the "Team Stats" in the right margin. If you click on the button that says "Log Your Run!" it should open up a Google Docs Spreadsheet. The first worksheet is the table for logging your runs.

Instructions for logging a run:

1. Make sure you're signed in to the spreadsheet (upper right "Sign In")
2. Go to the first empty row
3. Click in the first column and find your name in the drop down list.
4. Enter the number of miles you ran
5. Enter the number of minutes it took you
6. Enter the date of this run
7. Enter any comments you want, like where you ran, weather, or whatever. If it's that good, write a post!
8. Save the spreadsheet --click Save upper right (it often auto-saves)

Don't worry about getting the mileage and time exact. This is more for fun and to get a rough feel for how we're doing, how often we're running and what our average pace might be (race day pace is always faster!)

The second worksheet has a table showing totals and averages for the team. You can't edit this worksheet. The gadgets in the right margin of this blog pull data from this worksheet and display the pace in the "gauge" and the total miles and times we've logged.

Anyway, let's see how many miles and how many hours we can log before Hood To Coast!!

(Let me know if there are issues with the logging... I tried to grant everyone permissions to edit the spreadsheet.)

All Aboard!

Here's warm WELCOME to the rest of the team to this Blog. I finally granted our whole team permissions to add posts to this blog (long time coming! sorry!). The blog is used to swap stories about our training, share in the triumphs and challenges, motivate each other, and talk running or whatever else is loosely connected to Hood to Coast 2011.

How's it going? Let's hear some chatter!!!

Pace Gauge Arrives

I've wired up a pace gauge --see right margin. It's pulling data from a Google Spreadsheet that so far has a few runs logged for Robin and me. That's our average pace. In the next couple days I hope to enable the editors of this blog to update the spreadsheet, and allow the gauge to measure us all! I'll also be adding some other cool graphs that Google provides... Stay tuned, and keep on running!!!

Would you, could you, in the rain?

The past couple of weekends have been rainy (I know, no surprise). It has made for some chilly runs. Last weekend I was running alongside a golfing range as rail pelted down. Another runner on his way up the hill was running under the trees, and tossed out a wry, "Beautiful day!" as we passed each other. At least we weren't being pelted by golf balls. I always get nervous running that path when the country clubbers are practicing those long drives.

Despite the rain and chill, the air portends springtime which makes for excellent running weather.

How're y'all doing with your H2C training? Are you hoping to get hit by a train to get out of the deal? Or are you in the thick of Spring Training and getting some miles under your belt?

D&C 88:124

Alright...I've been slacking off enough as it is. Blaming the weather or my schedule for not get'n out and training for the upcoming HTC. This ends now. My new motto that I'm going to stick with is "Cease to be idle". I'm going to start posting a lot more on this blog and use it for what I created it for, to keep me honest with my training and motivated to get out there everyday. Even if no one is reading it or responding, I am committed to being accountable for my training from now until August 26th...."so let it be written, so let it be done!"

What's all this bubbling and churning?

You'll notice the lovely (not-so-lovely) white box in the right margin --it's a Google Gadget. It's a pathetically simple dividing calculator. But it's really proof that I've managed to get enough of the "wiring" figured out to actually enable a customized, interactive thing-a-ma-bobber going on this blog. Hopefully sooner than later I'll get some gadgets wired up to a spreadsheet and we can start logging our miles and minutes as a team and see fun charts and motivating stats. We'll definitely need some artistic work on them as well --Baron, how are your style sheet skills coming along? :^).

Live your life through the movies

Tonight Robin and I went to the "encore" special screening of Hood to Coast --a documentary of sorts that follows 4 teams through the event. A lot of great shots and some good stories. Got me excited all over again for this summer!
Enjoyed running about 3.5 miles today in the sunshine, but still not feeling back on my game since returning from the Near East... hoping the running will shake things loose. How's everyone else doing?
